Abstract

The so-called "Mediterranean Sexuality" is an old, non-identitarian model of MSM which still exists, although it would have had to disappear in a society (like ours) which recognizes the modern gay identity. Crossing the analysis of Mediterranean Sexuality with Lacquer's studies on sexual identities, what emerges is a close relationship between sex and sexuality, which might explain the etiology of this male sexual behavior. In this perspective, the predominantly heterosexual behavior of many Mediterranean men (who do not disdain occasional homosexual intercourse) would be related to the social conception of masculinity, and it would allow men to have a sexual behavior (that we now call bisexual) while maintaining their masculine social identity.
