This paper uses Turkey as a case study to examine how the EU’s inducement to create GEPs is being implemented in universities in Turkey. Using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods, the paper examines the extent to which institutions of higher education have adopted GEPs since the EC implemented its GEPs requirement for funding and whether those plans adhere to the requirements established by the EC. The study then moves on to a discursive examination the thirty-six GEPs found at the time of the study. This aspect of the paper revolves around two questions: what assumptions about gender and organizations underlie the GEP and to what extent does the GEP propose to transform the gendered practices within the institution. Although a few proposed actions can be considered transformative, the vast majority of the GEPs at universities in Turkey do not undertake the kind of institutional transformation that is necessary to achieve sustainable and inclusive gender equality. While the GEPs examined here represent a step towards gender equality in academia, too often GEPs in Turkey embody either a fix the numbers or a fix the women approach which leaves the institutional and cultural structures that generate inequality intact.

Keywords: Gender Equality Plans, universities, intersectionality, Turkey.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2242Lost in translation: Integrating the gender dimension in research and teaching in Universities through Gender Equality Plans2023-09-18T10:49:13+00:00Ilenia Picardiilenia.picardi@unina.itTindara Addabbotindara.addabbo@unimore.itEster Coisester.cois@unica.it
Gender Equality Plans have been widely adopted in the last two years by Italian Universities with an acceleration that was undoubtedly affected by the European Commission requirement for access to Horizon Europe research funding programme, while benefiting from the Horizon Europe guidelines and the guidelines of the Italian University Rectors’ Conference. This paper investigates the process of institutionalisation of gender promoted within Italian academia through the elaboration and drafting of GEP, analysing the translation processes of European policies on gender equality acted by academic institutions. Amongst the five priority areas included in the Horizon Europe Guidelines, the focus of this paper is the integration of the gender dimension in research and teaching. This choice is motivated by the core role of research and teaching in universities and by the authors’ assumption that promoting actions related to this area is particularly challenging from a transformative perspective. A methodology to analyse actions in this area is proposed and applied to a sample of Italian uni-versities selected to obtain heterogeneity in terms of geographical distribution and size. The analysis of more than 170 GEPs’ actions brings evidence of criticalities in their design in areas crucial to start a transformative process and, at the same time, identifies best practices and suggestions for the adoption of policies at the national or European level to support real change.

Keywords: Gender Equality Plans, higher education, gender dimension in teaching, gender dimension in research.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2233How inclusive governance should drive gender equality in universities: A proposed methodology 2023-07-31T08:32:58+00:00Anna Brescianinia.brescianini005@studenti.unibs.itCamilla Federicicamilla.federici@unibs.itMariasole Bannòmariasole.banno@unibs.it
The article tackles the topic of inclusive governance in institutional change and gender equality in universities. It has two objectives. First, it envisions inclusive governance as a method to effectively convey cultural change aimed at gender equality and proposes the implementation of a pilot case applied to the University of Brescia through a mixed-method approach. It develops a framework for the par-ticipatory governance process that lies on the theoretical basis that inclusive gov-ernance promotes institutional change and drives gender equality. In particular, the research identifies and describes three core elements: actors and roles, legit-imacy and delegation, and participation process. Second, based on this framework, the analysis suggests a methodology to evaluate the participatory governance pro-cess for introducing a Gender Equality Plan (henceforth GEP) within universities. The research employs a mixed-method approach and proposes a parallel conver-gent design that adopts three instruments: interviews, questionnaires, and focus groups. The article provides insight into understanding whether deep levels of co-operation in the GEP implementation through a participatory governance process would enhance the gender mainstreaming capacity of public administrations.

Keywords: inclusive governance, participatory governance process, gender equal-ity, Gender Equality Plans, mixed-methods.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2293Gender Equality Plans. Data activism (Milan e Gutiérrez 2015) seems to respond to such issues, as a set of socio-technical practices of grassroots activism and engagement promoting forms of social change for politically and socially marginalized groups. This work aims to analyze the participatory practices based on data related to GBV phenomena. Four case studies – Safecity, the Índice nacional de violencia machista, Hollaback and HarassMap – were classified based on Eisenhut and colleagues’ categorization (2020) of the apps dealing with Violence Against Women. Furthermore, the analytical framework of data feminism (D’Ignazio e Klein 2020) was adopted to analyze the experiences of data activism in the light of its seven tenets. Our results show that such projects stand out as virtuous examples of proactive and participatory use of data against GBV, in keeping with the logic of data activism, in compliance with the principles of data feminism and with a good level of heterogeneity in terms of services offered.

Keywords: data activism, gender-based violence, grassroots practices, digital feminism, crowdsourcing geo-data.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2142Poor prostitutes victims of the wealthy farmer: a critical discourse analysis based on a corpus of three Italian newspapers 2023-10-06T07:52:44+00:00Giada Stallonegiada.stallone@uniroma1.it
This paper aims to analyze the journalistic representations of the victims of femicide and of their killer. In particular, the focus is on a serial killer case which hit Italian headlines in the Nineties and was known as "the murders of Terrazzo". To this purpose, a corpus of newspapers’ articles was created and analysed. The news articles were retrieved from the archives of three of the most relevant Italian newspapers: “Corriere della Sera”, “La Stampa”, “la Repubblica”. The methodological approach combines Critical Discourse Analysis with Corpus Linguistics which is functional to highlighting the linguistic and discursive strategies that convey misleading ideologies related to gender-based violence. The results of the analysis show how the press ends to create a strong negative prejudice against women and to represent them as responsible for the inflicted violence; while the killer is described in positive terms and in some cases dismissed from his responsibilities.

Keywords: femicide, Italian daily press, victim blaming, critical discourse analysis, gender-based violence.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2148A dishonest look 2023-02-09T13:31:28+00:00Nicoletta Mandolinimandolininicoletta@gmail.comFederico Tenca Montinifedericotenca@gmail.com
Since the turn of the millennium, the issue of violence against women has emerged from the niche of feminist discourse and gained widespread visibility. In Italy, cases such as the rape and murder of Giovanna Reggiani by the Romanian Romulus Nicolae Maliat (2007) and, more recently, the killings of Pamela Mastropietro (2018) and Desirée Mariottini (2019) have fueled a political and media debate on the topic, in which far-right organizations have become involved. Italian and international research has already observed the instrumental function of reporting sexist abuse within the political discourse promoted by the new right, emphasizing its racist purposes and tendency toward historical revisionism. This article aims to contribute to the debate on femonationalism and gender violence through a study that sheds light on the strategies employed by the new right in Italy to fuel a revisionist rhetoric concerning the issue of the “eastern border” during the fascist era. The case under examination is that of Norma Cossetto, the daughter of a fascist hierarch who was presumably raped, killed, and placed in a foiba by Croatian insurgents during the Istrian uprising in 1943. Cossetto is extensively cited by Italian far-right groups in relation to the issue of gender violence. Through the qualitative frame analysis of 26 articles published on the websites Comitato 10 febbraio and Il primate nazionale, the study highlights the presence of a clear internal negotiation process within Italian far-right organizations regarding communication on the topic of sexist violence. This process prompts reflection on the delicate balance between political correctness and explicit conservativism that, in Italy as elsewhere, characterizes the relationship between neo-fascisms, right-wing populisms, and gender issues.

Keywords: gender violence, Norma Cossetto, femorevisionism, far right, femonationalism.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2186A focus on abortion support networks in Italy, between online and offline dimensions2023-04-13T07:32:38+00:00Martina Facincanimartina.facincani@uniba.it
A reactionary wave is crashing down on the reproductive rights of women and pregnant persons. In facing these reactionary thrusts, (trans)feminist movements and abortion support networks around the world respond with forms of self-organisation and civil disobedience. In their information, denunciation and advocacy work, these groups are supported by digital technologies. Although telephone lines continue to be crucial, virtual spaces such as blogs and platforms like Facebook and Instagram have become fundamental tools for connection and diffusion, enabling support networks to cross national borders and bring to public attention the renegotiation of the representation of abortion practice. Even in Italy, where abortion was regulated by law 194/1978, significant application problems persist, making the existence of support groups such as OBRES and Ivg, ho abortito e sto benissimo! necessary to expand the debate on reproductive justice and democratise medical knowledge.

Keywords: abortion, abortion support networks, reproductive justice, (trans)feminism, digital activism.
2024-01-17T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2247Identity denial as a form of violence: misgendering of transgender people in life contexts2023-10-02T08:04:13+00:00Marianna Coppolamcoppola@unisa.itGiuseppe Masullogmasullo@unisa.it
The social discrimination suffered by transgender people manifests itself in different forms: from physical and verbal violence to the humiliation suffered in different living and relational contexts; a form little studied in the scientific literature is that of gender identity denial, i.e. all those actions directed at transgender people with the aim of denying and delegitimising their own process of identity self-determination, as in the case of misgendering.

This research work aims to describe, analyse and understand the phenomenon of identity denial as psycho-social violence experienced by transgender people in various institutional contexts (such as health, legal, educational services, etc.), in order to understand the strategies implemented by transgender people in response to these actions, and how this lack of recognition is reflected in the way they consider themselves in terms of identity, before, during and after the gender reassertion process.

Keywords: transgender, non-binary, misgenderig, deadnaming.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2119Public Policies on Assisted Human Reproduction with Donors: Gender, Kinship and Ethics in Relation to Reproductive Practices and Their Regulation2023-01-19T10:34:01+00:00Begoña Leyra Fatoumbleyra@ucm.esAriadna Ariadna Ayala Rubioaayalaru@ucm.esCarla Cubillos Vegacarlacub@ucm.es
The aim of this paper is to outline some challenges faced by social scientists working in the field of assisted reproductive technology with donors (ART-D). Whether carrying out research or other professional activities, they face highly complex and ever-changing contexts that are traversed by various cultural, legal, ethical and medical issues. Through a literature review, we present three main lines of analysis: (1) the body and biotechnology, and how these relate to the anthropology of kinship; (2) feminist perspectives concerning the reproductive practices of women; and (3) problems that arise in the reproductive market – stemming from differences among countries in terms of health policies, legal permissibility, and the degree of discretion granted to the business sector – paying special attention to the resulting social and moral implications. This broad overview aims at encouraging debate within the academic community.

Keywords: assisted human reproduction, feminism, kinship, biotechnology, public policies.
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2260Un processo a colpi di meme!2023-11-11T17:04:49+00:00Mariella Popollapmariella@yahoo.it2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2243Gender perspective, intersezionalità e pedagogia impegnata: un caso di studio sull’educazione sessuale nelle scuole italiane dell’infanzia e primaria 2023-09-18T11:15:02+00:00Beatrice Riccibeatricericci.proj@gmail.com2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studieshttps://riviste.unige.it/index.php/aboutgender/article/view/2292La colonialità del genere e del potere: dalla postcolonialità alla decolonialità 2023-12-13T22:28:19+00:00Breny Mendozabreny.mendoza@csun.eduLaura Scudierilaura.scudieri@unige.it2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 AG About Gender - International Journal of Gender Studies
